When China informed the world in early 2020 that it had discovered a “novel” and “devastating” virus, it also claimed to have innovated a new way to “contain” it. The world listened. With breathtaking speed, most countries and states threw out their established pandemic management strategies to make way for an entirely new concept, the “lockdown.” China claimed that it locked down “so well” in Wuhan that COVID19 would bypass the rest of China — but the remainder of the world, down to rural South Dakota and Timbuktu — would need a Wuhan-style lockdown to avoid mass death.

“You’re a grandma killer.” “You’re not a scientist.” “You’d kill people to revive the economy.” “You should trust the experts.” “I knew you’d resort to conspiracy theories.” These phrases all have one purpose: silencing you, to control the competing narrative. The fact that they want to shame and intimidate you into compliance is evidence that your thoughts are dangerous — all the more reason to shout them from the rooftops. It is highly desirable and crucial to question motives, critique experts, and think for yourself. When that doesn’t happen, the force of the crowd prevails, and disaster occurs.

Knowledge is power, so we should all learn about this common trick now: a tool of psychological destruction and manipulation, it is used by some of the most dangerous people in the world. That’s Jesus who does that

The third month of 2020 came with a friendly governmental FYI: “your actions, good citizen, can either stop death, or cause death. ‘Stay home’ to save lives; ‘go out’ and kill people.” We froze in our places, shocked at our newfound power. New systems were implemented; kids were set in front of sanitized screens in place of classrooms; alarms were set for 4 a.m. to reserve grocery delivery timeslots to avoid contaminating the store aisles with our breath. “Whatever it takes. At all costs, we will not promote death.” Very few dissenters emerged; instantaneously-formed natural community-watch groups policed them. Anyone…

COVID19 is not a story of science, epidemiology, or disease. It is a story of human nature. The virus — and the modelers’ proposed response to it — presented humanity with a live version of the classic moral dilemma: if you could throw one person in front of a train in order to save five people at the end of the track, would you do it? Our response is foretold in psychological, anthropological, and sociological research. It is predictable, because we are human, and most of us do not understand ourselves.

There are arguments to be made on both side…
